Every Exceptional Home Begins With a Conversation.

Designing your home should be one of life’s most rewarding experiences.

For nearly four decades, Kevin Young Designers has guided families through a thoughtful,
collaborative process that transforms ideas into homes designed around the way they live.

By the end of our first meeting, I’m no longer thinking about rooms and square footage.
I’m thinking about how to create a home that will serve your family not just today, but as
your lives grow, change, and evolve through every stage of life.

— Kevin Young

  1. Will the family room have a fireplace?
  2. Should the kitchen connect to the outdoor living area?
  3. How do you entertain?
  4. Where does everyone naturally gather?
  5. What special features have you always wanted?

By the end of our first meeting, I’m no longer thinking about rooms and square footage.
I’m thinking about how to create a home that will serve your family-not just today, but as
your lives grow, change, and evolve through every stage of life.

It Starts with a Conversation, Not a Checklist.

Bringing Ideas to Life

With a clear understanding of your family’s lifestyle, we begin transforming ideas into design.

We will explore:

Floor plan concepts, space function and use, room relationships, traffic flow, natural light, outdoor living, architectural style, and special features unique to your family.

This is where ideas become possibilities and your future home begins taking shape.

Refining Every Detail

Once the overall concept has been established, we begin refining every detail of your home.

We will develoр:

Kitchen design, primary suite, ceiling treatments, outdoor living spaces, window placement, built-ins and custom cabinetry, architectural details, and interior flow and functionality.

Every decision is thoughtfully considered to create a home that is both beautiful and comfortable
to live in.

Preparing for Construction

Once the design is complete, we prepare a comprehensive set of construction documents.

These typically include:

  • Floor Plans
  • Exterior Elevations
  • Roof Plan
  • Electrical Plan
  • Site Plan
  • Foundation Outline
  • Building Sections
  • Cabinet Elevations
  • Construction Details
These drawings become the roadmap your builder will use to bring your vision to life.

Bringing Your Vision to Life

Once your construction plans have been completed, they can be submitted to the appropriate licensed engineering professionals for any engineering required for your project. Your builder will then have the necessary plans and documentation to begin bringing your new home to life.

While construction and engineering are handled by the appropriate professionals, Kevin Young Designers remains available to address design-related questions or provide clarification regarding the original design plans. For any additional design services or modifications, please contact us to discuss your needs.

There’s nothing more rewarding than watching the ideas we first discussed around the conference table become the home your family will enjoy for years to come.

Every Exceptional Home Begins With Your Vision

Designing a custom home is more than choosing rooms, finishes, and square footage. It is about creating a place that reflects your lifestyle, supports the way your family lives, and feels right for years to come.

At MDesign, our custom home design process begins with listening. We take the time to understand your goals, preferences, daily routines, property, and the details that will make your home uniquely yours. From the first conversation to the final construction documents, every stage is approached with thoughtful planning and attention to detail.

It Starts With a Conversation, Not a Checklist

The first step in understanding how custom home design works is getting to know you. Before developing plans, we discuss how you live and what you want your future home to accomplish.

We consider questions such as:

  • How do you use your living spaces every day?
  • Where does your family naturally gather?
  • How do you like to entertain guests?
  • What features are essential to your lifestyle?
  • How should your home connect with outdoor spaces?
  • What architectural style and atmosphere feel most like you?

These conversations give us the foundation for creating a home that is personal, functional, and thoughtfully planned.

Bringing Ideas Into Design

Once we understand your vision, we begin translating ideas into design concepts. This is where the possibilities start to take shape.

Our team explores floor plan concepts, room relationships, circulation, natural light, views, outdoor living, architectural character, and the overall function of your home. We look beyond individual rooms to understand how the spaces work together.

The goal is not simply to create a beautiful floor plan. It is to develop a home that feels natural to move through and supports your lifestyle from morning to night.

Refining Every Detail

After the overall concept is established, we move into the details that make a custom home feel truly complete.

Our custom home design steps include refining important areas such as the kitchen, primary suite, living spaces, outdoor areas, windows, built-ins, cabinetry, ceilings, and architectural features.

We carefully consider proportions, functionality, transitions between spaces, and opportunities for natural light. Each decision contributes to the comfort and character of the finished home.

This stage is where your ideas become more specific, allowing the design to evolve into a cohesive vision that reflects both your needs and your personal style.

A Thoughtful Custom Home Design Timeline

Every project is different, so the custom home design timeline can vary depending on the size, complexity, location, and level of detail involved. Rather than rushing through predetermined stages, we focus on giving each phase the attention it deserves.

Generally, the process moves from initial consultation and concept development into design refinement and construction documentation. Clear communication throughout these stages helps keep decisions organized and ensures the design continues to reflect your goals.

Understanding the timeline from the beginning also helps you know what decisions may be needed along the way and when they are likely to become important.

Preparing for Construction

Once the design has been developed and finalized, we prepare the construction documentation needed to communicate the design clearly to your builder and other project professionals.

Depending on the project, drawings may include:

  • Floor plans
  • Exterior elevations
  • Roof plans
  • Site-related drawings
  • Electrical plans
  • Foundation information
  • Building sections
  • Cabinet elevations
  • Architectural and construction details

These documents provide a detailed roadmap for turning the design concept into a physical home. Site-specific engineering, permitting, and other professional requirements may be handled separately according to the project's location and applicable regulations.

Bringing Your Vision to Life

With the design and construction documents complete, your project is ready to move toward construction. Your builder and other qualified professionals can use the plans to begin the next phase of the process.

Our role does not end with drawing lines on a page. We remain focused on the design intent and can help clarify design-related questions when needed. If additional design services or modifications are requested, those needs can be discussed based on the scope of the project.

What to Expect From Custom Home Design

If you are wondering what to expect custom home design to look like, the process should feel collaborative, organized, and personal. You should have opportunities to share your ideas, understand the reasoning behind design decisions, refine important details, and see your vision develop into a complete plan.

A successful custom home is not created in a single step. It develops through conversation, thoughtful planning, careful refinement, and attention to the way you want to live.

Let’s Begin Your Design Journey

Your home should be designed around you—not the other way around. Whether you are planning a new home, creating a forever home, or developing a unique property, the process begins with understanding your vision.
